Alphabet Gardens

Community Garden

Alphabet Garden is a mixture of hop-scotch and reciting the letters of the alphabet. We have done two Alphabet Gardens with Kinders, one at Fort Lowell ES and the first at Kellond ES. In both cases, the children painted the letters of the alphabet on stepping stones. We used "Oops! Paint" (miscolored and inexpensive), had GG paint the undercoat for the stepping stones, and then the Kinders painted the letters.

It has been over a decade since we helped with the last Alphabet Garden. We hope to build a few this school year in the Sahuarita AZ Kindergardens, and get some wonderful photos of these new projects.

The Alphabet Garden in the Fort Lowell Habitat indeed connects between two places and is a shortcut. Therefore it is used a lot and the children look and recite their letters as they travel through. There are three shapes in the stepping stones: circle, square, and hexagon.

Alphabet Song: Singing the letters from A to Z and from Z to A

Since the path goes both ways, it nice to be able to sing the Alphabet Song from "A to Z" and then from "Z back to A." With a little practice the Z to A's can be sung to the same tune and rhythm of the ABC forward version. Try it:

ABCDEFG HIJK LMNOP QRS TUV WX Yand Z.
Now I know my A to Z's, next time wont you start with Z?

ZYXWVU TSRQPON MLKJIHG FEDCB and A.
Now I know my Z to A's, next time wont you start with A?

(The Secret is in emphasizing the W).
